Today we want you all to look at one of my favorite stories in Scripture, The Good Samaritan.
Take a look here, Luke 10:25-37.
An expert in the law asked Jesus how he can inherit eternal life? Jesus asked him what the Scriptures say. He answered Jesus saying 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind', and 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' Jesus tells him that he answered correctly but then he asked Jesus, 'Who is my neighbor'. Jesus then tells the parable of the Good Samaritan.
We begin to read about a man who was beaten and left for dead. Two men, a priest and Levite, walk by this man and yet having seen the man and his condition they decided to move on and leave him there. Then we see a Samaritan who sees his condition and needs and he decides to help him by doing all he can to restore him back to health.
Why is it significant that a Samaritan did this. There was a deep hatred between the Jews and Samaritans. Jews saw themselves and PURE descendants of Abraham while Samaritans were seen as a mixed race of people that happened when Jews from the northern kingdom intermarried with other people after Israel's exile. Because of this Samaritans were not given much consideration even as people. They were JUDGED for something that wasn't even necessarily in there control. They were born as Samaritans and because of that they already seen differently by the Jews. No one wanted them in their presence or or thought they were even work talking to. What a huge surprise when this man, who was despised and hated, was the only one that stopped to help the man and went to extreme measures to help the wounded man.
What did you feel God saying to you through this passage?
Have you ever judged someone because of the race they were born into? their lack of athletic ability? their economic status?
Have you ever had a time where someone helped you out that you never ever would have thought would have? Who was it and what happened?
What is Jesus saying to you about how you interact with people on a day to day basis through this passage? What needs to change in your behavior and your heart?
